As the winter months started to set in, so did the second phase of our High Performance Sports Program. Our focus shifted towards season mode and as a result, training programs reflected this. Skill development/refinement and strength and conditioning training were still at the core of training programs, but we also started to implement match simulation/game scenario sessions to help further the development of our student athletes with their game play. This also tends to be the more favoured style of training with our student-athletes and one that is harnessed at elite levels. Term 2 saw some of our school sports teams commence their campaigns in state knockout competitions. Our school sports teams are benefiting significantly from the work being done in HPSP. Football and soccer were two sports of note to begin competition. From a theory perspective, Nathan Fleetwood guided us through Sports Psychology concepts with students exploring a variety of topics that included visualisation, motivation and goal setting.
The High Performance Footballers worked well again in Term 2. Skill refinement became the focus for the term with bodies needing to recover from weekend competition, school game commitments and an exchange during the middle of the term requiring some planning adjustments. A series of high intensity circuits focusing on disposal efficiencies emphasised the importance to the group, of taking responsibility for your possession and I have witnessed a general improvement in this area. Term 3 continued with this focus, and the inclusion of data analytics helped further the development of our footballers understanding of disposal efficiency and how they can improve their performance through analysis.
I continue to be impressed by the collective HPSP group with their approach and efforts in our program. A major focus during Term 3 was on our student’s professionalisms with an emphasis placed on uniform and punctuality and I have been pleased with how the students have performed.
